THE SUBMARINE CABLE.

INTERCOLONIAL NEWS.

Sydney, May 3. Daring a heavy fog the steamer You Yaugs struck on the rock outside Newcastle, and knocked a hole under her engine-room. The water put out the fires. She was towed into harbor. A. deputation to the PostmasterGeneral from the Chamber of Commerce urged the desirability of constructing a second telegraph line to Europe, and pointed out the loss and inconvenience resulting from stoppages in the present line by the absence of information affecting the Colonies. The Postmaster admitted the importance of the second line, and promised to consult his colleagues, with a view to early negotiations with the Australian Colonies and New Zealand. Arrived: Easby.

March 4. The Postmaster-General denies the statement that any hitch has occurred in the Pacific service owing to nonpayment of the subsidy. The City of San Francisco arrived at eleven o’clock to-day. Intelligence has been received from Western Australia that a gang of prisoners working on the coast near Perth escaped in an American whaler. The Government steamer Gazelle started in pursuit and overtook the prisoners, but were unable to take them back, having no warrant.

Melbourne, May 3. Lots of the salmon ova are being daily hatched.

An unsuccessful attempt was made yesterday to throw the train off the Hobson’s Bay line. The action of the Customs authorities in opening Messrs Stevenson’s letters is generally condemned.
