COUNTRY NOTES.
{From our Exchanges.)
Mr Vincent Pyke, M.H.R., will visit his co - atituents uefore proceeding to Wellington, with a view to making a note of the requirements of the district.
The cottage of Mr P, Graues, Cromwell, was completely gutted by fire on Monday last, only a portion of the furniture being saved. There was no one in the house when the fire broke out, and the only reasonable explanation of the accident is that some emhers from the stove must have caused it. The property was insured. A peculiar bird was caught at Hillend last week. It has a hook bill, is webfooted, is of a dark slate color, and is the size of a large pigeon. Whatever may be its name we believe it has but seldom been seen in this district. It has been forwarded to Captain Hutton for identification.
