APPEALS AGAINST COUPOEATION ASSESSMENT.Be Sabgood, Son, and Ewxlio.—Appellants’ new building was assessed at L 2.000, which the/ considered excessive. Mr Macassey appeared for appellants, Mr Smith for the Corporation.—Robert Gillies, accountant and laud agent, told he considered Ll.OOo would be a fair assessment. Crossexamined: Witness considered the value of the building and land was about L 20.000. He knew the land from seeing plans ot it, and had a very good idea of its size in nis own mind, but could not give expression to. that idea in words or figures. [Mr Smith cross-examined witness for nearly an hour on this point, he giving his evidence very reluctantly, and at last swearing that be did not know wbetbet the Vand. was ov eat a. quMAer ot an. acre ox oveshalt an acre in aize.J —Hugh HtTNeil, member of the frm of Arthur Bnscoe and Co., said he considered L 1,500 a fair valuation for Messrs Sargoods* building. He had been told, and he believe d, that the land was a quarter ot an acre in. size.—Henry Tew&ley, member of appellants’ firm, said he was not aware that the' land in the neighborhood of their warehouse had risen in value of late.. He bought the triangular piece next the warehouse about three years ago for Ll,Boo, and hod in conversation with counsel (Mr Smith) said that he would not now take LIO,OOO for it. That remark was however made to a probable purchaser, and in such a case the figure that Wonld be taken was not always stated. He wauld bwear he did not know if land bad risen in value during the last three years. The building cost witness’s firm about L21.000.—J. E, Morris, city valuator, gave evidence as to the calculation s upon whh,h he had founded the assesment.— His Worship decided that L 1,500 would be a fair valuation. • ■ ‘ * [Left sitting.]
