Tuesday, Maech 28. (Before H. S. Fifth, Esq., J.P.) Devskkssess, WiUam-Durie and 'William Myerwere each fined se, or, .in default, twenty-four board’ imprisonment; William Cockrell and Thos. Bell, each 10s or forty-eight hours’ imprisonment; Andrew t-Tamami, 40a or forty-eight hours’; Jane M’Leod, against whom there were a score of previous convictions, 40s or fourteen days*. (Before H. S. Fish, Esq., and A. Mercer, Esq., J.P.’s.) ...... Fobosbt.— William M'Ghee was charged with forging, on March 13, a cheque for the payment of L-l-10a with the name of Messrs W. and J. Scoular. —Wm. Sooular.of the firm of W. mii J. Scoular, merchants, -Dunedin, deposed that the cheque pro* duced- pnnortiug-to toe drawn bythefirmon the Bank oif New Zealand for L 4 10s . was a forgery.— Bobert H. Long, ironmonger, carrying on business -in George ' street, deposed that prisoner called at his shop on the 13th of the present (month and . tendered him the cheque now produced, telling him to lake LI out' of it that he hod previously lent him. Witness, did so returning him the balance in: cash. The oheqie was tendered at the Bonk of New Zealand for payment a day or two afterwards, and returned marked, vjKo account. ’* —Donald M. Stuart,-ledger-keeper at the Bank.of New Zealand, stated that the cheque now, produced was presented for payment on the 16th Inst. Witness returned it marked “No account." No one of the name of W. and J;' Scoular had an account at the Bank.—Prisoner was committed for trial.
