Should no man-of-war be available for the New Zealand station, the Commodore will send one of the schooner gun-boats commissioned to suppress slavery injthe South Sea Islands. Lord and Lady Normanby and suite leave for Auckland about the 15th proximo. They remain North about three mdnths. Christchurch, January 31, None of the Canterbury Infantry Volunteers ha< e qualified [tp attend the Colonial prize firing. - * Nelson. January 31. The Nelson and Wakefield railway was opened for traffic to-day. The formal opening takes place on Saturday, bub there will be no public demonstration. Mr Shapley. agfent for the Cable Extension Company, accompanied by Mr Cross, Harbormaster, and Mr Moling, has been taking soundings in various places for landing the Australian cable. It is gnerally understood that the place first mentioned will be decided upon. .
