A. fracas, which might have been (attended with # serious results, occurred at the Bridge crossing on the highlands on Tuesday monrng tot It appears that while the men employed by Mr Proudfoot, contractor, were engaged in the construction of the budge, a number of 1 men, headtd by Mr M‘George, assistant district engineer, arrived on the ground, and also commenced operations—removing timber &c The manager for Mr Proudfoot. Mr’jas! Styles, with a view of preventing the Government party levering some logs with crowbars, and picks, lay down on the ground in front of a As the men employed by Government got up close to Mr Styles they requested him to get out of the way of the log they were levering along, but he refused to move, and so they continued pushing it along. While doing so one of the crowbars slipped his trousers and drawers, but without breaking and struck Mr Styles on the side, going through the skin. We learn from several of those who witnessed the affray that there is not the •lightest reason to suppose that the blow was mfiicted wilfully. From inquiries we learn that Mr Styles will be prevented from resuming work for some time. Western Star.’
