ST. KILDA MAYORALTY.

The Domination for first mayor of the town«his of St. Kilda and'Musselburgh took place to-day, the candidate proposed being Messrs J. P. Jones and .Robert Goodison.

Mr Rough ton, in proposing Mr Goodison, said that hid it not been for that gentleman they would not have had a municipality of their own, but would have been incorporated witn South Dunedin, to whom they would have had to pay LI.OOO annually for the maintenance of roads, drainage, &c. lie opposed Mr Jones because he was a publican and laborers in search of employment would be induced to visit hiß house, because he was the agent of landed proprietors owning property in the municipality, and because ho was not a fit nnd proper person for the office of Mayor—they wanted a man of stability, and one on whom they could not rely. Mr Jones said he mainly asked the support of the electors, because in former times he had hf Id their support, representing them iti the Road Board, were he had fought hard for their interests. A large amount of work was before the Council—the health of the citizens involving the question of drainage and a supply of pure Water ; the formation and maintenance of streets and road-*, requiring the expenditure o f money to obtain which a Lan would be necessary, and other matters. His motto would be to do the most he could for the municipality, and to do it with the least possible expense, to show no favor to one in preference to the oiher, but to do to all alike, and for those reasons he asked their suppoit, in the expectation that when the next election came round—eight months hence—they would, on account of his faithful services, re-elect him for another tej-m of office.

Mr Goodison mere'iy promised, if elected, to do the best for the interests of the township. There being more than one candidate, all further proceedings were*adjourned to Saturday next, when a poll will be taken between 9 a.m. and 4 p m. A voto of thanks to the Returning Officer (Mr P. Paxton) terminated the proceedings.
