HARBOR BOARD.

At the Board’s meeting this afternoon there were present Messrs Reid (in the chair), Cargill, M'Neil, Tewsley, Davie, M'Kinnon, and Turnbull. The following business was transacted :

Sparrow and Co. wrote stating that they intended to enlarge their present premises on the reclaimed land, and asked if they could have the use of the channel there for the next three years.—Referred to the engineer for his report. Mr Cargill said he was sorry that the motion was carried to the effect that Major Gordon should be sent for, as it would involve considerable delay in carrying on the work.— Mr Turnbull said that they should get the Major to report previous to leaving Dunedin. On the motion of Mr M'Neil, seconded by Mr Cargill, it was resolved to invite tenders for construction of iron hull for the dredge New Era, tenderers to be requested to furnish the’r own plans and specifications. It was decided to order from England a contractor’s locomotive at a cost of between L 750 and LI, OOO and a hundred tons of rails and fastenings; and a resolution was carried to request the City Council to authorise Mr Mirams to consult with the Board’s engineer with a view to providing in connection with the proposed scheme of harbor improvement the necessary outlets for sewage. A letter from Mr Napier on the subject of concrete sea walls was read. On the motion of Mr Tewsley, it was resolved that. in calling for tenders for the wharf extension in timber, tenders should be invited for the construction of so many feet of concrete sea wall (tenderers to provide their own plans, he), and to guarantee their work standing for thiee years. The Secretary was instructed to consult the Board s solicitors with the view of preparing, under the new Act, regulationsj to provide for charges for all transhipments, whether made alongside the wharves or in the stream.
