MOSGIEL.

(From our own Correspondent.) Mosqiel, < ictober 18. The plain has now assumed a verdant color, •learly denoting that spring is with us Farmers are busy sowing ana planting their root crops, while the cereals sown show a fine braird. The telegraph office here is worked on a penurious style (penny wise and pound foolish), in not having a messenger attached. The officer ia cha ge has to absent himself from the office to deliver messages, and while so engaged parties wishing to forward messages from here have to wait until he returns. The approaches to the railway goods shed are now in a forward state, and this department is open for traffic. The passenger traffic per rail to Outram and West Taieri is now going via Greytown. I learn that the contractors for the Mosgiel and Outram Railway are going to make a start this week ; but this line will, I fear, be found co be a white elephant to the Province. A petition is being numerously sinned by the residents in and around Saddle Hill and Iticcarton in favor of the telegraph-station remaining where it at piesent is. This office being centrally situated and adjacent to the railway station, and being fitted up already with all the necesary requirements for a post office, might bo opened at once with much advantage lo the district. An influential committee has been formed t» curry out the ntsfor a banquet to be given to Mr Donald Reid on his return from Wellington. '
