(We are not responsible for the opinions expressed by onrjcorresjion dents.) THE STANDSTILL OF THE MXToEUM JfKFEN El). To the Editor. SlB, —We are awamstuun-d to see queer things done in the < olouAes, and to hear the freedom and independence of their people a good deal spoken about, and justly too. It is possible, however, that this it. dependence can be carried too far, even in a good cause. The recent discussion of the Otago Schoolmasters’ Association leads me to belie ve so. The action of tbe schoolmasters has, however, been totally eclipsed by that of the members of the Otago Institute who last Tuesday evening proposed the resolution condemning tbe action of the Government in delaying the erection of the new museum building. It must bo very amusing to tbe members >o.f the Government to see resolutions such as the one referred to proposed by any person wh«o knows nothing at all about the causes’ which have led to the delay, but it must be much more amusing to hear tfreir actions so freely criticised by one of their own paid servants. The motive of the mov*er may have been a very praiseworthy one, i v >nt it would certainly i ave looked better, anil probably wou'd have a little more weight wit hj the Government, had some of the other members brought forward the resolution, and hj rought it forward in a more courteous manner. The Government are pei fectly justified in refusing to go on with the building at the present time if there is any bitch ; and it sho s bad tm ste, t 0 say the least of it, on tbe part of the gentl ema who brought forward the resolution, and who, for that evening at any rate, acted the psvrt of champion for the museum, to make an;r remarks upon those who are his employers. —I am, &c., Expebiektia. Docet,.
