THE SCHOOLMASTERS' ASSOCTATION.

The quarterly ineeting of the above association was held this morning in the lower hall of the Athemenm. There were present—Messrs M'Lauchlau (in the chair), Park, Stewart, M'Kny, Milne, 0. Reid, id. Reid, Neish, Mmr.iy, M'liite, Sutherland, Cuthbertson. ami Ferguson. Tim following were elected office! carers for the ensuing year President, Mr Montgomery; treasurer, Mr Park : librarian, Mr Neish; secretary, Mr White. Mr Park read a paper on ‘‘School Inspection from a teacher’s point of view.’’ lie reviewed at some length the system of inspection at present adopted, and said that, speaking from lon4 experience, he was convinced that the devotion of nv-rely four or five hours to the examination of cadi school was iusutfi dent to enable nn impectcr to arrive at the true result, of the work that bad been accomplished therein. Again, there want be taken into c.<:•;-iderati-ii the peculiar bias of any in-speotovV im'ml, aud h ; s manner in end method of cx.iinhmi m—all these conducing in o coituin degree to a inure or PS3 favorable impres ion of tlio school's proficiency. Mr Park’s opinion was that school inspect ion was as yet in its pupillage, air I that theorists and educationists were gi oping in the dark. He thought examinations should be conducted in such a manner as to find out what the children really knew, instead of an inspector laying himself out to discover haw much they were ignorant of. OonHider.ible discussion ensued at the conclusion _of the paper, and the meeting was unanimous in its approval of Mr Park'd views. A vote of thanks to that gentleman concluded the proceedings.
