THE LABOR MARKET.
'To the Editor.
Sir,—lt appears that Mr Holloway is telling the people there is plenty of work here for all steady, industrious men. I give this a most emphatic denial. There are hundreds without work at the present time, and more are being poured into the country. Had I come here without money, doubtless I should have been placed in the same unpleasant position as many others have been—viz , charged with having no lawful and visible moans of support. Some say there is no difficulty in obtaininr work l)y going up-country, but such is not the case. The Press has frequently said men will not leave town, and this, no doubt, is true respecting some, but it docs not apply to all. _ As a proof I will refer to an advertisement in your last night's isuie for pick-and-shovel men for upcountry. I went in company with another man before eight o'clock this morning, aud we were told they had got .enough. In "Wednesday's Stab an advertisement appeared for two men for excavating, and on Thursday mornintr in the pouring rain about fifty applied for what was, after all, but about a dav's work. If the country was what it is represented, there would require nothing doing, todteep, people here.- I am, &c, Labor. Dunedin, September 25.
"Dar!' says Sambo, '*de President hab signed dat cibbil rights. Now we can go out an' hook turkeys jiss like the white folks." An Irishman, finding a blanket belonging to a United States' prison, rolled it up and put it under his arm, saying ' Tis' moine, U. for Patrick and S. for M'Carthy. What a moighty fino thing to have laming; if I had none I wouldn't have known the blanket was moine.
