THE CAVERSHAM ELECTION.

To the Editor. Sir, —Allow me to express my agreement with the letter of your correspondent “J.P.C.,” on the subject of the impending election at Caversham. I am very certain, from all the activity in politics from time to time exhibited by the electors in these districts, that they will rise superior to the attractions of large expenditure; but, at the same time, it may bo necessary to fight with the enemy’s weapons, and I for one will willingly contribute towards the expense of Mr Stout’s return, His views are sufficient justification of the importance of securing this; but there is another point in the case which wounds the honor of the electors, which is that they should be made the means of the return of the nominee an interest which has quite enough deleterious influence upon the Government already. I hold that it would ho a lasting disgrace to the pride of the electors of Caversham district, if they should suffer themselves to be made tools ■ll 10^U111 Mr Larnach. I hope they Will never permit this, and that even those who t isagrcc with some of Mr Stout's views will i nevertheless vote for him, bec(o.\so he anintle-

pendent man with an orginal mind of his own, and not merely a parrot-like repeater of the political shibboleths of one or other party.—l am, &c,, Elector. Dunedin, August 18.
