[By Telegraph.] (From our own Correspondent.) . . Wellington, August 2. Ihe Opposition caucus to day was attended by twenty-five members, and five others sent letters sympathising with the proposed action. Sir George Grey was elected leader of the Op position, and he will propose to the Government to agree to the second reading of the measure and pass what supplies are needed, if the abolition measure is not pushed further. They admit there is an overwhelming majority in favor of abolition. I. the Government decline their proposals the Opposition will speak against time, &c., hoping so to force the Government t«o a dissolution. At a caucus of Auckland members this afternoon, Sir G. Grey, Messrs Wood, Sheehan, and Creighton were appointed a committee to inquire into the financial position of the Province as affected by the Government proposals ; into the claims or the Province against the General Government, especially on account of railways, &c.; and into the smallness of the proportion of Customs revenue paid to the Province as compared with what is received. The Westland members waited on the Hon. Mr Richardson to-day re some necessary works in that district, but Mr Richardson gave them no hope, saying it would take all the Colony’s means and energies to finish the works on hand and authorised.

Mr Curtis declared in favor of the immediate passing cf the Bill and enxir m , ake notifications in committee, Mr Keid to-day presented petitions from the chairman of _ the Cavers am Road Board against certain provisions in the Dunedin Waterworks Extension Bill; also from 500 residents in Caveraharn, praying the Assembly not to grant the Corporation of Dunedin any compulsory rating powers over the Cavershara district, nor to sanction any enactment by which the petitioners may be bound by a body in which it is not reproented,
