Christchurch, July 6. The shop of Mr Cohen, pawnbroker, was burglariously entered on Saturday night, but only two or three pounds’ worth of imitation gold rings were taken. An attempt was made to open an iron safe imwhich all the valuable portion of the stock Was kept, but without success. The Canterbury Jockey Club, at a meeting on Saturday night, endorsed the action of the Auckland Jockey Club in disqualifying Edward Kelly, the jockey, and Alexander Huntley or Barron, the trainer #f Maori Weed. Mr A. G. Howland, of Christchurch, has patented an ingenious contrivance called a shaft-clip, for attaching shafts or poles to vehicles. Its qualities are simplicity, safety, greater facility in attaching or detaching shafts, and economy. Wellington, July 5. A new Commission of the Peace has just been issued. Auckland, July 5. A terrific N. W. gale last night did considerable damage to the small coasting craft in the harbor. A number of fences were blown down, but there was no record of any loss of life. Wanoanoi, July 5. An unusually sharp earthquake occurred early yesterday morning. It was preceded and followed by lesser ones for several hours, and occasional noises like of distant artillery firing were heard. The direction was N.E. to S.W. Some crockery was shaken off shelves, but no ether damage done. {From, our own Correspondent «.) Lawkbnoe, July B. A man named William Murphy, a passenger by the Asia, and lately employed by Mr Eagerty, of Green Island, was found dead between Laurence and Beaumont on Saturday. He died from exposure to the frost, which was very severe. He ia_ supposed to have been in bad health, as he did not drink. An inquest will be held to-day. Perry, a carrier, lost a valuable horse on Saturday through its eating wheat off a dray at the fl*>ur mill. Several other horses partook of it, and are in a dangerous condition, * The weather is threatening mow.
