The citizens of Christchurch, on the strength of this promise, are uOt sorry that the motion was negatived • for had it been carried, the City would’ not have got the money grant which now they expect to get and they still hope to get possession of the license fees by applying to the General Assembly, the more so as the Hon. E rjicnardson, who is a member of the Provincial UuucU expressed himself in favor of the general principle of license fees and dog taxes Seine made over to municipalities. After the motion or the second reading was negatived, Mr Montgomery moved the adjournment of the House till Wednesday, and it is expected the roveminent will resivn.
Poet Chalmers, April 14. An accident, attended with loss of life, occurred at Broad Bay this afternoon. A young ;nau named William Styles, while endeavoring to rescue a calf which had fallen down an unused well became overpowered by the noxious vapors, and let go his hold of the rope to which he was attached fell into the water. The calf got on top of him and he was smothered. A youth named Christie endeavored to descend to his assistance, but found the vapors arising from the well to be so powerful he was compel ed to desist.
