THE LABOR MARKET.
Mr Skene reports The demand for qualified servants for both town and country has been very brisk during the week. Farm hands are rapidly picked up. Good ploughmen and stockers are not in the market. Female servants are always wanted, and get good wages. Tradesmen of all kinds are actively employed, especially the building trades. The crops being extra heavy, every hand will be needed. Engagements made at the following rates Married couples, for country, L 75 to L9O; farm hands, from Lssto L 6 5; harvest men,’ L2 per week, all with rations , dairy hands, 15s and 20s per week; house girls, from L 26 to L 36; waitresses, barmaids, cooks, and laundresses, from L 45 to L 55; useful boys and girls, 6s to 10s per week; carpenters, from 10s to 14s per day; masons, from 15s to 18s per day; grooms, &c., 25s and 30s per week. Plenty of work and good wages is the rule outside Dunedin. A good many shopmen and clerks are availing themselves of this chance.
