Commercial.

On Tuesday last Messrs M‘Landress, Hepbum, and Co. offered at auction, at their rooms, the Christchurch portion of the Royal Diadem’s sugar, from the Mauritius, when every line_ was placed, though at a slight decline. Fine whites fetched L 3 4; ordinary whites, L 32 10s to L 33 5s ; finest counters and yellows, L 32. The next day the trade were surprised at the announcement of the arrival of two cargoes of sugar from the Mauritius. This somewhat unusual circumstance for the present appears to have somewhat overstocked the market. No doubt, this is the feeling with the trade, who have not yet realised the large and daily increasing demand consequent upon increase of population and extension of trade. In all probability, it will be found that the • supply is not beyond our requirements, and the unexpected arrivals may be considered to indicate the future of Dunedin as the entrepot of New Zealand. The teas ex Amur are to hand in good condition. The cargo has, apparently, been carefully and judiciously selected. Spirits are firmer than for some time past. Hennessy’s brandy is held for somewhat higher prices, and commands 30s, Brandy in bulk is still in plentiful supply, and the price unchanged. Geneva has improved in value; J.D.K.Z. cannot he purchased under 30s 9d. Beers continue in full supply, and no change can be quoted. In dried fruits, currants may be quoted at 4id; Eleme raisins, 6£d; muscatels, Is. Candles have improved in value, and is freely given. New cheese is now coming in in larger quantities, and realises to_9d; butter, Hid. Hams and bacon may be said to be absolutely unprocurable; any failprice would be given for them. A few changes have taken place in oilmen’s stores. Pickles are becoming scarce, and are much sought after —9s 9d to 10s is obtainable for Morton’s. American salmon, oysters, and lobsters are in full supply, and may be had at 11s, 6s 6d to 6s 9d, and 10s 6d to 11s 6d respectively. Corn sacks are in request at 12s 3d.
