(From our Exchanges.) The Clutha ‘ Leader ’ publishes the following reply by the Colonial Secretary to the petition of settlers at Waiapa relative to the diversion of the line of railway to Clinton via Four Mile Creek :—“ I he matter has again been referred totde ngineer-in-Chief. and he points out so many reasons why the line should go by tbe latter route, that the Government regret they cannot c mply with the request which your Honor has been p l eas< dto make. I may add that the difference in tbe coat between the two routes would go far towards constructing a branch line, and the difference in their working expenses would more than cover expense of work ng it ” t he Superintendent’s visit to the Milton Pottery Works has been postponed (ill Monday when he will be accompanied by the Commissioner of Customs, The Government is energetically pushing forward road and railway woiks at Clinton, Popotunoa, and it is said that they aie going to erect railway workshops at < ’linton, Popotunoa, on account of its central position. An accident of rather a severe nature happened yesterday to a man narred Thomas Gray, a pLte-layer near Milton, who was severely injured. Gray was jumping off a truck and in some way tripped and fell, his face hitting the*edge of a si ep r and cutting his cheek and forehead to severely that the flesh was separated from the bone. He was sent to Dunedin in t l e afternoon.
