ANNUAL HORSE SHOW.
Whether the unfavorable weather prevented horses being shown that would otherwise have put in an appearance we do not know, but at anyrate the number exhibited was smaller than usual. There were some very handsome thoroughbreds, in excellent condition. Of course there was variety, but in the main the horses were of a very good stamp—clean in the limb, round-barrelled, fine heads, short-backed and long-quartered. Several of the heavy horses were splendid specimens—high-crested, full-chested,_ wellcoupled, with short backs and muscular anna and thighs. They were all Clydesdale horsey, a breed that appears to be preferred in Otago to lighter apd more active animals. The wet uncomfortable weather rendered clothing' the thoroughbreds fcecessary, which in consequence were not ssen to such advantage as' they would otherwise have been. The convenience of a covered yard at the Provincial Hotel for show purposes caused a very great number of spectators to assemble ; but without any attempt at a joke, it miy be fairly said the wet |veabher aeted as a damper upon the show. ' There were about thirty entries, Mr Dodson’s Oassibelaunus being the centre of attraction, and with just cause, as there has never been a finer animal in the yard, At the sale some thoroughbreds were offered for sale, with the following results ;-=• Flying Dutchman, bought in at 340 guineas ; Bar* won, bought in; Right Bower, bought in. These three were recently imported from Melbourne by Mr Coembes. Butterfly was sold for 41 guineas, and Baroness Burdett fetched 35 guineas.
