THE WATER OF LEITH.
To the Editor. Sir, —It is manifestly certain that unless the Corporation take some steps to secure the encroachments of this erratic stream within bounds, there must ensue great loss of property to the surrounding proprietors, with just the possibility of loss of life. At present the embankments are gradually subdoling on each recurrence ef floods, and I now, on my own behalf and that of neighbors, implore the City Councillors to take some action ere it be too late, so as to guard against what may eventuate in a catastrophe. Surely the Government might assist the Corporation with a few prison laborers for so desirable an object, so as to have this mest necessary work proceeded with, for however unimportant this matter may assume in the minds of our authorities, ’tis deserving of their most serious attention. Believing. Sir, that you will use all you* influence in having this work proceeded with without delay,—l am. &c., Thomas Birch. Dunedin, September 29.
