THE REV. S. D. SALMOND.
To the Editor. Sir, About a month ago I observed in the ‘Elgin Courant,’ and also in the Edinburgh journals, a paragraph to the effect that “the hev. 8. l>. - almond, Free church MinForfarshire, has been offered the Professorship of Theology iu the Otago You, too. in 'your last issue have reproduced that paragraph. The ignoranee of Home journals is excusable in respect to the existence of the Otago University. But Provincial journals like the Star know full well that there is iu reality no *uch University iu existence. Moreover, the professorship in question is not for the so-called but for a quasi-divinity hall m connection with the Presbyterian Church of Otago. A Professorship of Theology is a very vague designation. What branch of theology i s he to teach? or, is he to be a jack-of-all tradee and a matter of none, like some other professors in these Colonies ? So much for that. Now, Sir with regard to Mr Salmond, I may state that he was twice a candidate for a Gmnity chair both in Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Whether he will accept a situation in the hall behind the cathedral remains to be proved.—l am, die., „ . J* Gr. S. Grast. Dunedin, September 18.
