CITY COUNCIL.

There was only formal business transacted at the City Council meeting last evening, because the Councillors were desirous of attending the adjourned meeting on the Water question. were of opinion that tbe amount of compensation to be paid for the extension of Cumberland street would have to be decided by arbitration, as they were not prepared to name any specific sura. The Finance Committee reeommended that the salary of the Collector, Mr Goodman be increased to L 225, and that he he required to find security to the amount ol 600; and that the salary of Mr Bain should be increased to 1170, and that he find security to the amount of 1200. The salary of the additional Inspector of Works was fixed at L 251) per annum The question o. increasing the salary of Mr -Simpson, sexton for the .southern Cemetery, was deferred until the next meeting. It was also decided that the Finance Committee should take into consideration the advisability of increasing the salary of Mr M'Kenzie, the present Inspector of Works.
