ECLIPSE OF THE MOON.

Mr A.H. Ross, optician, Bond street, has sent us a beautifully drawn and lithographed diagram of the moon’s path during .the coming eclipse, with the following explanatory remarks, which will add much to the interest with which the progress of the eclipse will be watched : There will be a lunar eclipse on Saturday, May 2. . I have constructed a diagram showing the moon’s path through the earth’s shadow, also the time at which the various phases of the phenomena will occur at or near Dunedin. The following are the particulars, the time being given to the nearest minute, in civil time. Astronomical time is that shown on diagram : First contact with the penumbra. May 2. Oh 31min a.m. : ’ First contact with the shadow. May 2, lh.47mma.m.'; : ' Middle of the eclipse, May 2, 3h 25mm a.m.' Last contact with- the shadow,' May 2, sh3min a.m. Last contact with the penumbra, Mav 2. 6h 19rain a.m. ■’ That is, the eclipse commences at 31 minutes tt a ?p on Friday night, and finishes at T9 minutes past 6 on Saturday morning. '■ The eclipse will be partial, its magnitude being (moon’s diameter = 1) 0.826. Knowing the interest, you take in such subjects, I forward you a reduced copy of the diagram ; the original I will forward to the Athenaaum M the course of the day.
