BOTTLE LICENSES.

To the Editor. Sir,—l see that the new Licensing Bench have entered upon their duties in earnest, and are determined to act up to the very letter. I do hope they will, in the interests of humanity and morality, make a genuine sweep amongst those curses to society—The Bottle Licenses. Some holders of such are so daring that they do not scruple to threaten people into nobblerising. Truly, things are coming to a pretty state. The pitch to which sly grog selling has arrived in one or more bottle-licensed stores in this town is amply disgraceful. It is a sad thing to see poor little children, bare-footed and ragged, running to stores with gin bottles for sixpenny -worth of beer. This can be seen at ml hours ef the day. It is well known that it is not tlm profits derived from selLng groceries which keeps these petty places: no, it is the sly grog and beer traffic. 1 wonder what the brewers would think if they knew to what use their labelled bottles are put to by some “ ’cute folks.” Brewers, look oulr—when your customers ask for a bottle of ale and pay Is or Is 3d for it they expect to get air of the brewer’s own bottling, not cheap beer bottled by a storekeeper. There are far too many bottle licenses in the locality I have referred to

There are ns less than four, in addition to four hotels, in one ten chain block. One cannot therefore complain of not having enough accommodation here at anyrate. If, Mr Editor, you will kindly insert this in your paper, you will greatly oblige, One who Knows. Dunedin, April 24.
