Caledonian, L 6 3; Tookey, Ll9, wanted at that figure. Lyttelton, January 2. The Regatta took place yesterday. Shaw, Saville, and Co.’s cup was won by the gig Fernleaf for the second time. The remaining races were postponed owing to the northwest gale. Hokitika, January 2. Mr Robert Thom son was drowned while bathing in the lagoon yesterday. Wellington, January 2. The Supreme Court opened to-day. There are eight cases for trial. The Judge, in his charge, expressed a high opinion of the value of grand juries, although the system, he admitted, might be advantageously modified. He expressed his approval of the recent change in the law relating to civil juries, Albert Holmes pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny, and was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. John Mulbem was convicted of a violent assault, and was sentenced to six months’ hard labor.
