CALEDONIAN GATHERING.

The exceptionally fine weather caused a larger concourse of persons to assemble at the Caledonian Gathering yesterday than wc have witnessed there for many years. The grand stand was crowded with spectators, and the coarse presented a most animated appearance. There were probably 6000 persons present. The booth-keepers were busy plying their trade throughout the day, and every forte ‘Of rnusement on the ground received n a . full share of public support. The yvhole gathering was a decided success, and the following are the results of the first day’s games 100 Yards Handicap. First prize, L2; second prize, LI. First heat—Westland, 1 ; second heat— Pollock, 1; third heat—Power, 1; fourth heat—Coppin, 1; final heat—Westland, 1; Pollock, 2. This was a closely-contested race, and only won by Westland, after a Sever? struggle, by about a yard. Time, 10! seconds. Power, who was running well, unfortunately fell when about three yards from the winning post, and one yard in the rear of the winner. Youths’ Handicap Race, 250 yards. First prize, LI: second prize, 10s. Niue accepted their handicaps for this race. Aarons, Bennett, and Miller started from scratch ; Williamson, 5 yards; Jones, 7 yards ; Wilson, W. Hogg, Martin, and Maine receiving. 10 yards. First heat—Bennett, 1, being about a yard in advance of Hogg (time, 29 secs.); second heat—Bennett, 1, winping easily by afiont three yards, Aarons coming in second about three yards ahead of the third man. First prize, Bennett ; second prize, Aarons. Putting, or Throw ing Ligh t Bali.. First prize, L 3 ; second prize, LI. Eight competitors—Chalmers making the splendid “put” of 40 feet 7 inches; ,A. Macdonald second, with 38 feet 10 inches. The putting would have been decidedly better had the judges not restricted the eofupetitors to 8 feet, but had al’owed them to choose each his own distance aud “put” iu his own way. It was clearly evidenced that the result would have been different had this course been adopted. Allan M ‘Donald having obtained permission to choose his own distance, made the splendid “put” of 4-1- feet 6 inches, being about 4 feet over the winning throw. Running Long Leap, First prize, L2 ; second prize, LI. There were three entries for this event, the result being that the first prize was taken by Fox iu ope jump—distance, 19 feet, beating the second man (Power) hy five inches. ’ ‘ ' * Quarter Mile Handicap Race. First prize, L 3 ; second prize, LI. Twenty-three entered; thirteen competed. First heat—L. Westland (time 561 seconds); second heats Power (56i seconds); third h*»t, Smith (58f seconds); the other competitors being nowhere. Fourth heat, vphich was the fastest and best contested race of the whole, L’oppiu (15 yards handicap) and Wain (17 coming in a deadbeat. Jn the final beat Coppin and Saiitlj Baying tripped each other up shortly after starting, Mb the race to Westland, Wain, and Power. This event brought forth two competitors, but tbe day being advanced, the competitors agreed, with the permission of the judges, to postpone the dance to to-day. Throwing Light Hammer (12 lbs). First prize, L 3 ; second prize, Ll. Seven entries. A. Macdonald, with the splendid throw of 129 feet 5 inches, 1; Chalmers, with 104 feet 3 inches, 2. Handicap Hurdle Race, 500 yards. Eight flights.
