MAYOR'S COURT.
This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor and A. J. Willis, Esq., J.P.) STEALING, AND RECEIVING STOLEN GOODS. James Christy and Phillip Ashton, on remand, were charged, the one with stealing a cheat of tea, and the other with receiving it, knowing it to be stolen. The evidence was again gone into that was produced on the previous occasions. Mr Ward defended the prisoner Ashton. The evidence showed that Christy went into Ashton’s shop, in Walker street, and offered him the chest of tea for a sovereign. Ashton offered fifteen shillings for it, but having only fourteen shillings on hand, Christie accepted the money, gave a receipt for L 4 10s, and afterwards “shouted.”
His Worship said that taking the circumstances into consideration, the Bench had no alternative but to conclude the tea was stolen. He thought Ashton was the more culpable of the two, as, were there no means of disposing of stolen goods, the temptation to steal would b.e lessened. The prisoners were sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, with hard labor. The Bench recommended that as no owner could bo found for the tea it should be given to the Benevolent Institution.
SUMMONS CASES. A charge against George Green for allowing
a mare to wander was dismissed. A. M'Lood Mahons wnn lined fin each and costs for allowing thine cows to wander.
