[from oue ow.v correspondent.] LATEST FROM THE FRONT. TE KOOTI DEFEATED. Wellington, January 31, 2.35 p.m. Auckland, January 29. Letters from the Front state that Manuwhori prevented the departure of 300 Kingites to co-operato with our forces, Ilewi has ostensibly gone to get the Ngatiraukawa to desert To Kooti. Forty Kingites, .under Marino, are said to have gone to join our forces. Messengers have arrived from Dambridge with despatches from Colonel M‘Donnell. At daylight on the 25th, To Kooti attacked his cam}), which had been weakened by the departure of Kemp to attack Te Kooti’s pah. Colonel M'Donnell intended to follow at daylight. Te Kooti is supposed to have got wind of it, and intended to attack the camp after Colonel M'Donnell’s departure. The troops overslept themselves, and his object was defeated. Col. M‘Donuejl led his men against the enemy, had a severe skirmish with them. Qoj. was slightly wounded by a splinter from a tree. A party of natives approached carrying the J uiou Jack, and being supposed to he Orjoudlies, Colonel M'Donnoll called out not to lire, when they throw down the Hag and poured in a volley. Our loss was oue killed, one dangerously wounded, and four slightly.
The enemy was driven off and left three dead on the field. Te Kooti’s pa being abandoned, Kemp took and burned it. Te Kooti’s horses arc captured, and he has retreated into an extensive bush behind his former position and is supposed to be making fur the Uriwera country. A force has been sent from Tauranga to Makctu to intercept him in the Rotorua country. The Provincial Council proposed to offer a bonus for a paper manufactory ; also for the manufacture of woollen tweeds. Great trouble is exported at Ohinemuri. The miners are determined to rush the district, if the Government does not open it up. Small blocks on the Walkan River have been thrown open. 2 p.ra. Col. M'Donnell scuds word to the Government that he does not know where Te Kooti has gone to. He does not know what to do, Mrßranigans presence at the front is said to be doing harm. The officers do not liko to serve under him.
