Telegraphic.—A notice was issued at the Telegraph ollice to-day, that to-morrow being the anniversary of the foundation of the Province of Nelson, holiday hours will be observed at all stations in that Province. Concert. —Madame Carandini will give her first concert this evening. bit George’s Hall has he-n beautifully fitted up for the occasion ; and if the weather prove fine, we have little doubt that tin re will he a large attendance. » Furious Driving.—At the Mayor’s Court this morning a Mr J. Nichol was fined for this offence L 5 and costs. The Bench on giving judgment took occasion to point out that the numerous instances of reckless conduct in both horsemen and drivers led Ihe Bench to determine to put down the practice. It is high time that such a resolve was put into force. Freeholds. —If there is one thing more than another that conduces to the habit of saving and carefulness in working men, it is the acquisition of a piece ot freehold land. The difficulty of acquiring real property has long been felt. A reference to our advertising columns will show that land may now he acquired on terms almost ■within the reach of every one, in the most popular and rising suburb of Dunedin, namely the extended township of St. Andrew’s, Cavcrshara, twenty minutes walk from the Post Office, Dunedin. The Hogburn Road. —A deputation from the Hogburn waited upon his Honor the Superintendent with reference to the road from Pigroot to Naseby. Mr Main introduced the deputation. It was advanced that the lino proposed by the Government was not the best that could bo adopted. _ It was maintained that, by making a slight deviation from the line laid down, it would prove of groat advantage to the inhabitants of the district, and would save nearly 13 miles without missing Sowburn, and urged the necessity of something being done without delay. His Honor said the subject should have immediate consideration, and if any funds remained available out of the L 4009 voted for such works, immediate action would hc'takcu. Supreme Court.— Mr Justice Ward held a sitting this morning, when the following business was transacted : —Be James Henderson: This matter was allowed to stand over.—Re John Glasstie ; On the application of Mr M'Keay, this matter was adjourned for a month. —Be Robert Baxter 1 : There being no appearance of the bankrupt, the case was struck out.—Be David Kirk: There being no opposition, the usual order of discharge was go anted.—Re John Brutus ; Same. —Re Alex. M'Kinnon : Argument of rule nisi to show cause why the adjudication of bankruptcy should not he annulled. Mr Macassey, with whom was Mr Howorth, moved that the rule be made absolute ; Mr Smith showed cause. His Honor reserved judgment.
A Meeting of the Standard Property Investment Society, for the purpose of receiving subscriptions, &c., is announced to be held at the offices of the Society on Wednesday evening next, between the hours of G and 8 o’clock.
