CALLING IN SUGGESTED
A notice of question to the Minister of Finance by Mr. J. B. F. CotteriU (Government, Wanganui) in the House of Representatives yesterday asked the Minister whether he would consider the calling in of all bank notes of oyer £5 in value and at the same time give the Commissioner of Taxes power to inquire into the origin of all notes of large denomination, for the purpose of determining whether taxation had been evaded.
Mr. E. ■B. Corbett (National, Egmont): Gestapo! " In a note to his question, Mr. Cotterill said that certain other Governments had embarked on the suggested course of action in order to reduce taxation on those who met their obligations by making tax evaders pay their just dues. The Minister of Defence (Mr. Jor.es): They don't like that.
