PRICES FOR POULTRY,
Townsend and Paul, Ltd., report the following prices for live poultry :—White Leghorns: Hens (best) ss, 6s each, others 4s, ss; cockerels Is Bd. WELLINGTON CUSTOMS RETURNS,
Increases all round are shown in the Customs revenue and allied returns for the month of August, when compared with the same returns a year ago. Net customs for the month totalled £252 635 compared with £227,080 In August last year, and for the eight months was £1,917,794, compared with £1,812,514 for the corresponding period last year. j Details of other returns were: Sales tax £105,829 for August (£91,105 last year)«----£823,062 for the eight months (£737,354 last year). Beer duty, £19,248 for August (£16,760); £144,533 for the eight months (£123,583). War tax, £391,261 for August (£355,877) ; £3,051,800 for the eight .months (£2,854,961)
DIVIDENDS DECLARED,
The Hume Pipe Company (Australia), Ltd., reports a net profit of £30,311 after providing £7500 for- taxation. At the annual meeting on October 2 the directors will recommend a final dividend on preference shares of 3% per cent., making 7% per cent, for the year, and a dividend on ordinary shares for the twelve months of 4 per cent, (unchanged). British Tobacco (Australia), Ltd., has decleared an interim dividend of 2 per cent., payable on September 29. An interim dividend of 5 per cent, has been declared by Woolworths, Ltd., on the paid-up ordinary share capital of the company, based on shareholdings as at September 30, and will be available for payment on October 15. Woolworths (Victoria), Limited, have declared a dividend of 3% per cent, for the half-year ended September 30 on the 7 per cent, preference sh.are capital of the company an* will be payable on October 15, based on shareholdings as at September "30
WRIGHT. STEPHENSON, AND CO
A successful trading year, with higher earnings, is recorded In the annual accounts of Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., for the year ended June 30. It Is remarked, however, that after deducting general expenses, depreciation, provision for taxation, and bad and doubtful debts, the amount remaining, £74,279, is £2080 less than the preceding year. Deducting debenture interest, directors' fees, and the company's contribution to employees' pensions fund, the net profit is £42,672, an increase of £433 compared with last year. The amount carried forward from last year's accounts was £35,427, to which is added the profit for the year of £42,672, v thereby providing a credit balance of £78,099. A dividend at the fixed rate of 2% per cent. (less national and social security taxes) on preference shares and an interim dividend of 2% per cent, on ordinary shares were paid for the half-year ended December 31 last. It is now proposed to make a. further payment on preference shares of 2V» per cent, (less social security tax and national security charge) for the half-year ended .tune 30, and to pay a final dividend of 2 1/. per cent on ordinary shares, which will make the dividend on the latter 5 per cent, for the year, and to transfer £15.000 to the general reserve There will be left £37,156 to be carried forward to next year.
