LOSSES IN SICILY

THE AMERICAN FORCES

WASHINGTON, September 3.

The Acting Secretary of War, Mr. J. J. McCloy, said that the American casualties in Sicily of. 7500 killed, wounded, and missing brought the army's total war losses to 70,872, of which 9209 were killed, 20,159 wounded, 21,764 missing, and 19,740 prisoners. More than 9000 wounded had fully recovered and returned to active duty.

Mr. McCloy added that though the Sicilian operation was relatively easy and no substantial opposition was encountered on the beaches, it cost the U.S. forces a number of lives. A future operation would doubtless cost more.
