LORD AUSTIN
(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, May 23. Obituary.—Lord Austin, chairman of Austin Motors.—B.O.W.
Lord Austin, of Longbridge, chairman of the Austin Motor Company. was born in England in 1866, and served his apprenticeship in engineering at the Langlands Foundry, Melbourne. He managed several small works in Melbourne, and went to England in 1890 to manufacture a sheep-shearing machine. He became manager of an associated tool and motor-car company, and began the manufacture of motor-cars on his own account in 1905. In 1919-24 he was a member of Parliament. An act of generosity which brought him notice was the gift of £250,000 to the famous Cavendish Laboratory. He was president of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1930, and president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in 1934. He was knighted in 1917 and received a barony in 1936.
