GOOD LEVIN CARD
TRANSITION TO SUMMER
With, the Canterbury jockey ' Club's Metropolitan Meeting completed,- the spring racing session in the Dominion has been practically concluded, and the meetings during the next few weeks will provide a.-transition to the summer meetings, which open, with the holiday racing at Christmas: and New Year. Thi? week's meetings will be at Levin, Waikato, and Southland .on Saturdayythe Waikato fixture, having a second day on Monday. The form at the. late November.- and early December meetings is generally instructive for those with.an eye on the holidays, and therefore much interest will be taken in the racing at Levin next Saturday. Good fields have.been secured for the eight events, only that in the hurdles, being a trifle light, and, with the Ngahauranga Gorge and coast roads now open, strong patronage is anticipated by the club from Wellington. 7 ' There are'two open events on.the Levin card; the; Levin Handicap (formerly the- Levin Cup). H miles,, and the J. R. McDonald Memorial Handicap, seven, furlongs.: - ; ' In the Levin Handicap is last year s winner, Play On, with top weight (9.0). and this horse is' due to return j to form after a period of disappointing efforts. Better supported, however, promise to be. Corroboree and Lord Moutoa, who filled the minor places at Bulls a fortnight ago, and Trebor i and The Bigot are a pair the others who should, shortly be showing to more advantage on the firmer tracks. Silvanus hails frofe .the stable that beat Lord Moutoa and Corroboree at Bulls with Verey Lights, and she has been, given plenty of time since her fivst race j for the term early in September, Fly- j ling Acre, trained on the track, is a! I mare of mixed performance, but she; ! always has a chance under a light !scale of weights. -~,.,. In the McDonald Memorial the only horse 'with-winningform this season is Screen Stay, but seven furlongs beat him at Otaki in September. The other members of the field, outside of Flyiing Acre, who holds the dual engage-j ment, are horses who are likely to come to hand over the holidays. Jeanne is lone bf these; this mare, though she ihas been off tlie scene since winning at Hastings ia June, being one who comes in well fresh. The Crooner's acceptance indicates tliat his connections.are; 'still hopeful ~he will: stand 7up to a j short preparation, arid, but ■■ for this j doubt he is the class-horse of the'field. Boomerang has been showing more! i specd1 than stamina in his races since j resuming. Galteemore will be hav-j ing his first start following his spell and he should be better later on over longer distances. The three-year-old Beau Pere filly Tableau has lately had a couple of starts at Napier and is due Ito show improved : form before long. She has won only ono.race,.but it was the Musket Stakes at Ellerslie; as a two-year-old. and deprived her at once jof her hack .statiis, Flamrnaribh was I second to Brunhild at Masterton, but' he will be hard to 'hold* on to his ! course round the turning; Levin track. There is always the possibility that Flying Acre might essay the double event, as the course is not so serious a drain on resources as rooriiier tracks. Slippery took on the double in 1934 arid 1935, winning ■ the McDonald Memorial after having "run- third' in the Levin Handicap in the former, year, and finishing secorici ih. bqth races ih. the latter year. .Suecess'in the Levin Handicap would carry liability to'a; re« handicap for' the "McDonald Memorial,
