A MAORI HOUSE

CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS

Steady progress is being made in the construction of the Maori Court, which is located on the motor and transportation block. Members of the Maori race are working assiduously on the building of a traditional house, where Native culture and craftsmanship will be displayed. The building, 77ft long and 34ft wide, is a structure of remarkable solidity, for it is meant to last, arrangements having been made to have it dismantled at the close of the Exhibition and re-erected as a permanent Maori dwelling at Kaiapoi.

Leading Maori craftsmen of the present day, trained in the lore and technique of their ancestors, have produced excellent carvings which are now being placed into position. Groups of workmen are engaged on the walls and roof, while outside the designer and the painter are preparing the decorative rafters —each with its symbolic interpretation and each fitting into the general scheme.

The Maori Court, which will be the centre of Maori craftsmanship and entertainment during the Exhibition, will be completed about the end of this month. It is intended that this court

when finished shall afford an insight into the culture, costume, and language «f the race.
