THE BIG FOUNTAIN
MAY BE USED TONIGHT
Wellington's capricious winds have kept the coloured fountain silent and still since the opening of the Exhibition last week, but hopes are held that this evening may be fine and calm and that this spectacular feature of the Centennial festival will be seen in action. Tests carried out this morning proved the fountain to be mechanically perfect, though the light southerly carried the giant sprays well across Centennial Avenue, causing passers-by to keep clear. All is ready for a full dress display if the wind drops this evening.
One fact about the fountain of which the Exhibition authorities are particularly proud is that, with the, exception of the pumping motor, the whole of the structure was made in this country, from the tiny cocks operating the multitude of jets to the majestic statuary which embellishes the base and decorates the sides of the great basin. When at work the fountain is one of the sights of the Exhibition.
