EVENING OF PLAYS Among the talented-performers contributing to an evening 'of plays arid music in the Rongotai College gymnasium recently, were several highlypractised exponents of the art of playreading. .The performance was arranged by the Parents' Association in aid of the school funds." The first play, "World Without Men," by Philip Johnson, concerned a woman reporter's dream while waiting to interview a prominent society woman, "Madame Pavel," played by Mrs. Teward. Other parts were taken by Mrs. Moult; Mrs. McKane Wallace, Mrs.' Heron, and Mrs. Monroe, Mrs. Brown taking the reporter's part. ' The scene of the second play was ■ set on a South Sea Island in 1960, and i the cast included Mr. Sanderson, Mrs. | J. A.: Heron, and Mr. John Heron, ail. of whom were "castaways." Miss Pru- J dence Marten as "Hel^n Barron" played i the refractory castaway, and Miss Joan Wallace, as the pilot, acted the rescuer.! The play was an amusing skit on English conventions and was much appreciated by the audience. ' The musical part of the programme ' comprised several, well-known songs ■ given by Mr. K. H; B. Strong, who sang . "The Lute Player" and "Passing By," ' and duets were given by Mr. and Mrs. H. F. . Gardiner. Mrs. E. Morrish. soprano, sang. "Love's a Merchant" arid "Songs My Mother Taught Me," and Mr. D. L. Irvin "Sea Fever" and "Linden Lea." Two violin solos, "Hungarian Dance" (Brahms) and "Gavotte" (Gossec), were contributed by Mr. L. A. C. Warner. The accompanists were Mrs. A. Gibson-Foster and Mrs. L. A. C. Warner. The president of the Parents' Association,. Mr. A. J. McLennan, delivered an address during the interval and said -that similar functions would be held periodically. ■
