A VIENNESE PARTY

OPERATIC SOCIETY'S "BIERGARTEN" Strauss waltzes were irresistible at the. party given on Saturday night by the Wellington Operatic Society. As soon as a waltz tune was played almost every guest rose to dance, leaving vacant- the green tables and chairs'i which were set between the matching, rose-garlanded trellises and which transformed the society's studio from j the normal clubroom to a gay Viennese "biergarten." Frankfurters were provided for the benefit of the ' guests and these, with their, accompanying refreshments, proved particularly popular for the niglit was unusually cold.. ; - Several parties arrived in peasant garb, one or two people wearing authentic costumes. In addition a band of Bavarian gipsies danced to the music of a violin and tambourines, its members comprising Misses Pat Gillespie, Pat Read, Cora Duncan, Nedra McDonald, Margaret Thodey, Hilda ; Webster, Margaret Armour, Jean Gilmer, Pat Gledhill, and Betty Souter, all of whom represented the Victoria League. The Charley's Aunt Club was represented by the president and a party of fourteen members. ' Items were given by Mr. Ivan Smith, who sang, Miss Ida Lockwood, who played violin solos, and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Hickford who sang duets. Mr. Walpole was accompanist. The committee for the party, which was the first of a series being held to raise funds for the society's next production, "The Belle of New York," comprised Miss Dorothy Casey (who was wearing a frock of blue shot taffeta under a white fur coat), Miss Ivy Power (red georgette trimmed with silver), and Miss Kathleen Hayes, and Messrs. M. Cachemaille, V. Small,. G. Power, and R. Aveling. Miss Momi Kirk wood was in charge of the "hot dog" stall and was among the busiest officials of the evening. Special guests of honour were Frau Gertirud Bodenweiser and Herr Lorbar. Others present included Mr. arid Mrs. W. Walpole, Mrs. W. Hall, Mr. and Mrs. H. Ainslie, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Woodward, Mrs. O'Connor,. Mr. and Mrs. Brice, Mr. and Mrs. R. Pritchard, Mrs. R. Phillips, Mr. and 'Mrs. E. Upchurch, Mr. and Mrs. Norrie Denton, Mrs. C. Simms, Mrs. D. Look, Misses Sheila Wilson, Margaret Armour, Barbara Basham, Winnie Male, Peggy Hyams, Cora Duncan, Patricia Read, Jean Gilmer, Yvonne Andrews, Molly Cook, Joyce Myers, MdMullan, E. Bacon, Merle Stewart Ruth Skerman, Valmai Cramond, Marjorie Cook, Gwyn Jones, Phyllis Hilkie, Joycelyn, Moore, Val Wallace, Sylvia Morrison, F. Brammall, Mollie McMillan, O.
