TRUBY KING'MEMORIAL

NELSON, July 27. I An excellent entertainment was given by the musical and play-read-ing circles" of the Nelson Women's Club last Friday in aid of the Plunket Society's Truby King Memorial Fund. Mrs. S. A. Gibbs, president of the club, spoke of the society's work, I and Miss Nevin, the society's presi- ■ dent, thanked the club and members [ for the splendid effort on their behalf. I The room was decorated with bowls of lovely heather. j Those' performing were Mrs. A. I Campbell, Mrs. E. R..Neale, Mrs. P. R. Parker, Lady Rigg, Mrs. R, Stedman, Mrs. R. H. Methven, Mrs. Noble, Mrs. Nightingale, Mrs. Hishon, Miss Tucker, Mrs. Rose Innes, Mrs. C. Graham, and some of those present were Mrs. Gibbs, Mrs. Wilkie, Mrs. J. B. Lemmer, Mrs. T. Nossiter, Mrs. Airey, Mrs. T. E. Hudson, Mrs. C B. Pharyzen, Mrs. Scott, Miss Tomlinson, Miss Gray, Mrs. J. Hume, Miss E. Richmond, Mrs. R. H. Davies, Mrs. H. V. Searle, Mrs. T. A. Johnston, Mrs. Gascoigne, Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. J. Glasgow, Mrs. Craighead, Mrs. C. B. Hodgson, Mrs. L. Lewis, Miss F. Childs, Miss Rhodes, Mrs. G. Dodds, Miss Hunter-Brown, Mrs. Moynihan, Mrs. Dyke Marsh, Mrs. Allan, Miss Carmichael, Miss St. George, Miss Bisley. Miss Nevin, Miss Gilkison", Miss England, Mrs. J. Lorimer, Mrs. Campbell, and Mrs. Shale. . Repertory Society. A very excellent rendering of "People at Sea" was given last Tuesday by the members of the Repertory Club. The readers were particularly well cast and the interpretation was one of the best given this year. Those i taking part were Mrs. P. R. Parker, Mrs. A. Campbell, Mrs. G. C. Kirk, Mrs. E. Coote, and Messrs. Huggins, Sim, Norris, Hill, G. Kirk, P. R. Parker, H. S. Leggatt, and D. Fowler. Arbor Day. As is customary, the Arbor Day committee, in its annual effort to encourage the planting of trees, always makes a special appeal to the children. Their efforts are encouraged andj supported by the City Council and the j Commissioner of Reserves, and the| residents of the future will pay tribute to those who are endeavouring now to revive interest in the appreciation of trees and shrubs. Inter-club Golf. With the forming of so many country golf clubs, the Acheson Cup, presented by Mrs. Mackesy, who as Miss1 Sybil Acheson, was for many years the Nelson Club champion, is always on the move. Last week the Stoke women challenged Motueka, which club succeeded in retaining the cup. Air-Minded Nelsonians. Since the Nelson Aero Club acquired its own plane, the "Brig Arrow," many people are qualifying as pilots, and the graceful monoplane circling the town is a very frequent sight. Annual Diocesan Synod. The general Synod was opened last Monday by the Bishop of Nelson, the Rt. Rev. W. G. Hilliard. The representation of all parts of the diocese is excellent, and a very happy week is being spent by all members and their wives. Personals. Miss A. M. Whiting, England, who has been staying in Poverty Bay, is at present at the Hotel Nelson. !
Mrs. L. Sladden, New Plymouth, is staying with her daughter, Mrs. R. A. Lucas, Hardy Street.
Colonel and Mrs..'E. Lorimer, Richmond, have returned from a. trip to the southern lakes.
Mr. and Mrs. R. Tolhurst, who have been spending a few days at the Hotel Nelson and also at Kairuru, have returned to Wellington.
