PROSPECTIVE HOSTESSES MEET

The president and councillors of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce held a social evening at the /Art Gallery, Buckle Street, last night. The president, Captain S. Holm, in a humorous speech, explained the reason for the gathering, saying that it was with the object of making the wives of the members acquainted with one another so that when the annual conference is ,held in November the wives, who will play an important part in the entertainment of the visitors, will not find themselves entertaining each other in mistake for the wives of the visitors.

The Wellington Chamber of Commerce members, who are to be the hosts of the conference, have already made plans for the social activities of the delegates and their wives. Captain Holm gave an outline of the programme and asked for suggestions and co-opera-tion. It had been suggested, he said, That all the members' and delegates' wives should be invited to the opening of the conference. Every visitor was to be provided with a three days' ticket to the Centennial Exhibition and there were to bt receptions, scenic drives, and private entertainment in the homes of the members.

Mr. R. H. Nimmo, vice-president, also made a brief speech and he concluded with the suggestion that everyone present should start the evening by shaking hands with, and introducing themselves to, those in their vicinity.

A very entertaining evening was spent. Two films were screened, one being supplied by the Tourist Department and shown by Mr. Casey Songs were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Gamble and after supper there was dancing.

Supper was served in the spacious tea room, the tables being decorated with lovely spring flowers. Those at the official table were Captain and Mrs. S. Holm, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Nimmo, Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Bardsley. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hindle, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Enting, and .Mr.. P. E. Pattrick.
