A FINE OF £50
ART UNION WINNER
INTOXICATION CHARGE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
One'of the winners of the recent art union, Edward Vernon Reynolds, aged 21, appeared in the Magistrate's Court this morning and pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car. He was fined £50, in default 30 days' imprisonment with hard labour. His driving licence was cancelled and endorsed, and he was prohibited from obtaining another for three years. "This is not an ordinary type of offence. The only reason we are not making it indictable as a hit-and-run case is that we consider Reynolds was not responsible for his actions. He was too drunk," said Sub-Inspector Packer. The car driven by Reynolds cut a corner and hit a cycle on the rear wheel, added the Sub-Inspector. The cyclist was thrown some distance, but was not seriously injured. "The car never stopped," said the Sub-Inspector, "and although another motorist gave chase' he was/unable to catch it, but took the number. This he reported to •the police, and Reynolds was found in a restaurant. At first he denied' he was Reynolds,! but later admitted it. It is a very serious case, and he should Ibe taught a lesson."
"This young man' is fortunate to own half of a winning ticket in a recent art union, arid the money, to a certain extent, went to his head," said counsel for Reynolds, j "He is a steady and reliable -worker/and when he won the money lie gave £'50 each to his mother and brother." ■
