SELF-CONTROL LOST

YOUTHS IN CABARETS

MAGISTRATE'S REMARKS

Reference to the numerous cases Which have come before the Court recently of disturbances in dance-halls and cabarets was mad^ in the Magistrate's Court today by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., who condemned the attitude of young men who go to such places under the influence of alcohol.

"Young men go to cabarets and other public places in a semi-intoxicated condition, take more liquor when they get there, and they lose their self-con-trol, causing trouble to themselves and the management, and annoyance to other people who have gone there to enjoy themselves," said the Magistrate. ".These cases of disorderly conduct are frequent, and they must be visited by a heavy penalty.

"If people go to public places to enjoy themselves they must behave themselves, and if they do not they must be prepared to pay the penalty."

In the case which came before the Court, as a result of a disturbance which occurred in the Majestic Cabaret on June 17, William Steven Pearce was charged with assaulting James Jones, C. H. Boyton, and L. E. Paterson. He denied the charges, but-was convicted and fined £5 and costs on one charge and convicted and discharged on the other two. Thomas George Pearce, who pleaded not guilty to assaulting Paterson, was convicted and fined £1 and costs, the Magistrate remarking that the circumstances in his case were somewhat different from the other. ' Sub-Inspector D. J.. O'Neill prosecuted.
