TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

Ashhurst nominations are due at 9 o'clock this evening. f Wellington 1 entries, also forfeit for the Wellington Stakes, close at 5 p.m. tOA°^sitor to the recent Wairarapa Meeting was Mr. Albert Hoskins, president of the Waimate Racing Club who remembers the1 course of old, as^some fifty years ago he rode many^ horses there, including Humour and Pasha. A two-year-old who impressed at Tauherenikau was Sir Crusoe, a halfbrother by Defoe to Meamea and racing in the same interests. Only greenness lost him his race on the second day, and he might even have beaten Globe Trotter at the difference in weights on the first day if he had not gone out very wide. The southern, horseman A. G. Parsons was not riding as well as usual at Tauherenikau, but -he had a heavy fall off Great Flight while working the filly the day before the races and he was still feeling the effects of that SDill.

The Levin trainer W. Hume took a nice type of two-year-old ; filly by Defoe from Horomea to the Marton Meeting for experience. As yet she has not been seriously tested, but she shapes: as if she will be more than useful later on. ■ While contesting the Ne,w Year Hack Handicap on the first day of the Marton Meeting Whetuma broke down badly, and it is probable that he will have to be spelled for some time before being trained again. A. Jenkins has the promising maiden Valiant Lady in light work, but she is a delicate feeder and for this reason she did not race over the holidays. Snigger was backed down to favouritism in the maiden race on the first day of the Marton Meeting, but another failure was credited to her. It would not be surprising if she is retired to the stud later in the season. Beau Repaire, a half-brother to Royal Chief by Beau Pere from Modiste 11, shaped encouragingly at Ellerslie, and hopes are held out that he will develop into a high-class performer; Although beaten in his two outings at Ellerslie Beaulivre was far from disgraced, and with High Caste's going to Australia the Trentham colt should be very difficult to beat in races during the late summer and autumn if he holds his form. Brazen King was showing signs of soreness prior to the Marton Meeting, and it was decided to allow him to forgo his engagements. The trouble is not deemed serious, and it is possible that he will require only a short spell. The northern horseman H. N. Wiggins is a past master over sprint distances, and three of the four open sixfurlong events were credited to him at Ellerslie.

Taurangi had her first start over a middle distance when she contested the Marton Cup, and with an ounce of luck she would have won. She is likely to be in demand in any race she contests at Trentham.

Ecstatic simply outclassed the fields opposed to her in the hack fives at Marton, and she has only to maintain her present form to win again shortly. This, three-year-old fil]y is out of that good Panmure mare Enthusiasm, and she is a full-sister to defunct Great Hope and a half-sister to Hunting Queen and Entheos.
