AGREEMENT REACHED

SPORTS GOODS WORKERS

A complete agreement was reached in conciliation council yesterday afternoon in the Wellington sports goods workers' dispute. The Conciliation Commissioner was Mr. M. J, Reardon and the agents were Mr. T. J. L. Tucker for the applicant workers, and Mr. A. W. Nisbet for the employers.

The following rates of wages for adult male workers were agreed upon; First-class gunsmiths, first-class fishingrod makers, £5 10s per week; iron club head grinders, £5 ss; assistant gunsmiths, assistant fishing rod makers, wooden, club head makers, racket makers, racket stringers, and sprayers, £4 15s; assemblers and all other workers, £4 10s.

The statutory provisions regarding holidays and payment for work done on such days are to apply and Anniversary Day is to be allowed as a holiday without deduction from wages, time and a half rates to be paid for work done on that day. Five working days' holiday on full pay are to be given to workers completing each twelve months of service.

Piecework may be worked by mutual agreement between the union and the employer provided that not less than the minimum rates of wages are paid.

The 44-hour week agreed upon for workers in retail sports shops is to be worked on five and a half days.

It was decided that the term of the award should be one year and that the wages and overtime provisions should operate from December 18, the coming into force of the other provisions to be fixed by the Court of Arbitration.
