NO TRAFFIC LIGHTS
KAIWARRA RAMP
COUNCIL CRITICISED
Regret at the decision of the Wellington City Council not to install traffic lights on the Kaiwarra over-bi-idge was expressed by the roads committee of the Automobile Association (Wellington) in its report to the monthly meeting of the executive last night.
"Just recently traffic was making use of the overbridge and the chaos which followed is very strong proof of the necessity for the installation of automatic lights at the entrances to the overbridge," the report stated. "The roads committee recommends that strong representations be made to the City Council for the installation of automatic lights, certain provision for which has been made in the new work, before the bridge is open for traffic."
Mr. E. Palliser said that for the sake of an expenditure of £900 to £1000 the whole effect of the new route would be neutralised. Recently the overbridge was unofficially tried out, and the effect of traffic turning from the Hutt Road on to the ramp indicated that there would be chaos unless lights were installed.
"I think the City Council was a little short-sighted in its policy there," saidMr. Palliser. "The City Engineer had provided for the lights, but in cutting down the estimates they were deleted."
The report was adopted
