SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS

A very happy conclusion to the social activities of .'the season by the Wellington South African War Veterans' Association was a card party held at the clubrooms, Lambton Quay, on Saturday night. The president, Captain J. J. Clark, was present, also Mrs. Clark, who is president of the ladies' auxiliary.

Captain Clark thanked the guests for their loyal support during the season, and stated that it gave him much pleasure to announce that quite an appreciable sum had been raised to assist the association's finances. It was the intention of the executive to hold a picnic at Levin, probably at the end of the last week'in February, and he extended a cordial invitation to the guests to be present. Many of the branch associations, within a certain radius of Levin, would be represented.

Mrs. Clark also spoke on behalf of the ladies' functions, and presented bouquets to Mrs. B. C. Cull (honorary secretary and treasurer), Mrs. G. d'Emden (joint leader with her husband of the Saturday functions), and Mrs. A. J. Morris (who had supervised supper arrangements). A presentation was also made to Mr. J. Nicolson, who had rendered assistance at all functions.

The winners of the card games were: Bridge, Mrs. Wes* and Captain A. A. Monks; "500," Mrs. P. J. Wilkinson and Mr. B. Little; euchre, Miss Bamber and Mr. J. Hallam; competition, Mr. B. Little. The special Christmas prizes were won by Mrs. O. de Berry (first), Mrs. A. Rosenberg (second), and Mr. C. Munn (third).

The proceedings concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem.
