BOOKMAKING CHARGES
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —With reference to bookmaking charges at Petone this week, I do not seek to argue the ethics of betting but I vigorously protest against the inference which may be drawn from the remarks made by counsel, Mr. Rothwell. Mr. Rothwell said: "It was widely known that the majority of tobacconists were expected to offer facilities for small bets, and a tobacconist who did not offer these facilities was in danger of losing his legitimate business."
It may be inferred from this that the majority of tobacconists are bookmakers or agents. My experience in this same town and elsewhere has shown the tobacconist-bookmaker to be a minority. The hairdressing and tobacconist trade is self-supporting without the assistance of the betting fraternity.—l am, etc.. LES D.
