* SOLDIERS' "JOY NIGHT"

A "joy night" with an attendance of over 200 dancers was held by the Returned Soldiers' Association in the clubrooms at Lower Hutt last night as the concluding function of the season. Gay decorations of multi-coloured streamers and balls., flags filled with balloons, paper hats, and spot dances emphasised the carnival spirit abroad, appropriate music and a savoury supper completing a «very successful function. Mr. G. Page was M.C. The committees comprised Messrs. E. Wilton (chairman), H. E. Edwards, F. Smith, J. O'Meara, L. Hook, W. Goad, W. Garrett, R. Parrant, A. Staples, C. Akers, W. Hamilton, and Mesdames A. Robins (wearing green and silver cloque), H. Edwards (scarlet moire), R. Parrant (patterned satin), E. Wilton (cornflower blue crepe), D. Annear (blue cloque), J. O'Meara (turquoise satin), W. Evans (olive preen crepe satin), J. Pointon (cerise taffetas), F. Stedman (green marocain), W. Hamilton (black net taffetas), G. Shand (floral voile), E. Woolley (gold lame), and P. McNicol (geranium pink matalasse). Christmas Sale. The ladies of Knox Church Guild held their annual Christmas sale of work in Knox Schoolroom yesterday afternoon. The excellently-stocked stalls attracted a large number of buyers, and a busy and' successful sale ensued. A novel feature was "The Lady of the Hundred Pockets," who, in early Victorian costume, complete with poke bonnet anri crinoline of the period, sold mystery packets from the many tiers of pockets which encircled her voluminous skirt. This was a very popular attraction. The stalls and stallholders were as follows: —Christmas stall, Mrs. J. Thompson Macky, Mrs. M. Macaskill; utility stall, Mesdames R. R. Orr and C. Edmeades; produce, Mesdames Pilkington and Christie; cakes, Mesdames B. Whitcher, L. J. Evans, and C. E. Robertson. In the tearoom, where Iceland poppies and crimson roses with maidenhair fern made dainty decorations, were Mesdames A. Batchelor, G. Prendeville, B. Adam, M. Rowan, and R. G. McJnnis. The "Lady with the Hundred Pockets'' was Mrs. J. Blair, who was assisted by Mrs. Harold Webley.
