EMERGENCY LANDINGS
Apart from the programme of air base and aerodrome formation and expansion in both islands, the -Public Works Department has a secondary programme for the establishment of chains of emergency landing grounds at intervals along the main air routes, for the advancement of safe air travel. A site at Paraparaumu was selected some time ago as a probable emergency field for the Wellington approach and the decision has now been made to proceed with the levelling of .about a hundred acres. At present the land is largely a sand dune waste, covered with rough growth. Tenders for levelling and clearing have been called and a start will be made after the Christmas holidays. The field will carry no buildings, as it is not intended for other than emergency use.
